Hi.

My name is Matthias and I’m from the Upper Palatinate region.
My girlfriend and I want to build a new house. We already own the plot of land, but there is still an old house on it.
Now to my question.
Am I allowed to dig up the telephone line myself and move it aside, or should I have the telecom company do it?
According to the telecom company, they have to do it because the main distribution frame (MDF) will be removed and a new one installed in the new building. They are asking me for 800€.

I’m still a bit new to this field.
I hope you can help me with this.

Thanks
Best regards, Matthias

Will Telekom have any objections?

Hello,
during preparatory work on our demolition project, a cable was unknowingly cut. It was located directly beneath the paving slabs, which we had removed ourselves. However, it is unclear whether the cable was installed properly. Under the paving slabs, there was a sand layer up to 10cm (4 inches) thick, followed by a cast concrete slab without reinforcement. The telephone cable lay between the paving slabs and the concrete layer, embedded in the thin sand layer without any special marking. Our demolition contractor said that cable cuts happen quite often (also because the telecom company sometimes takes months to disconnect the line!).
Nevertheless, it is not allowed!
What will happen next in our case? We are curious as well. I will report back in the summer.
Regards, Daniel

Hello

I dug all the trenches for utilities (electricity, telephone, and water) myself. No subcontractor had to come with an excavator, which I would have had to pay for.
I would carefully excavate the telephone line and place it somewhere protected. The telephone company can cap it when they install the new line. Who would oppose that? And why? I can dig as much as I want on my property.

I can understand your point, but the phone lines or coaxial cables from the cable providers are surveyed and owned by the respective companies. Therefore, before the construction project, it should be reported that these need to be removed.

@Nordly: I consider a new connection including the removal of the old one for €800 (about $860) reasonable and not excessive.
