Hello!

As the title suggests – can there be advantages to choosing double glazing instead of triple glazing?
I read on Konrad Fischer’s website that while double glazing does not reduce heat loss from inside to outside as effectively, it does allow more heat to enter from the sun outside to inside. In other words, it creates a greenhouse effect, and in terms of overall energy balance, it might not be as disadvantageous compared to triple glazing as one might initially assume…

Furthermore, I’m interested to know if triple glazing can also have hidden but significant disadvantages.
In the case of renovating older buildings, problems can arise if the rest of the house remains poorly insulated.

New construction or renovation? South-facing or north-facing? What quality of windows do you want to compare?

The clear answer: both yes and no!

For example, we recently renovated the windows of a three-family house. In this case, we used "good" windows with double glazing. Why? Cost savings, as the rest of the building was not suitable for triple glazing from an energy perspective – in other words, it wouldn’t have made sense to use a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

In my own apartment, I chose triple glazing about two years ago as part of a renovation. Why? The building was fitted with an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS), and the windows matched that. Furthermore, I personally find the warmer interior surface noticeably more comfortable, since my office, as well as the dining table and the couch in the living room, are directly next to windows.

😀... now Konrad Fischer is joining in. I don't think any of your questions should be taken seriously here anymore...

Lumpi... you can simply ignore me! Please do so! I do NOT want to be the valve for your bottled-up aggression... please leave me alone!

nordanney... thank you for your response! So it really depends a lot on the specific building, and it’s not possible to make a general statement about triple glazing. I could imagine that it also strongly depends on the size of the window areas... In my new build, one side of the living room, which is about 70m² (750 sq ft), is almost an uninterrupted glass surface...

P.S. Personally, I don’t think much of Konrad Fischer either. He is also a climate change denier like Trump – I just can’t take him seriously ;-) Aside from his whole anti-insulation mania...
