Good morning,

I would like to hear your opinions on the choice of roller shutter slats, as I am uncertain about it.

We have to decide between aluminum or plastic roller shutter profiles for the upper floor.
I am leaning toward the cheaper option, simply because I think that if someone breaks in, they probably won’t put a ladder up against the house to get into the upper floor. I would choose aluminum where there is easy access.

Am I mistaken?

For increased burglary protection, you need to opt for extruded aluminum with a synthetic resin core. Additionally, there is a locking anti-lift device and reinforced outer rails. Unfortunately, this costs quite a lot of money. On the upper floor, I would skip the extra effort. Burglars look for easy targets, not a physical challenge...

Electric aluminum roller shutters are slightly cheaper than motorized venetian blinds from a well-known company. We got quotes for both options for our 3m (10 feet) lift-and-slide door. The aluminum roller shutters were 80€ cheaper. So the decision was easy on what to choose.

For comparison: Aluminum is usually only chosen if technically necessary, if you don’t want venetian blinds, or if you want a specific/dark color that needs to remain colorfast. Otherwise, aluminum roller shutters are generally a poor value in terms of price.

Just my personal opinion.

Your experience sounds more like you were offered an aluminum roller shutter at a significantly inflated price.

I always find it so sad: during the day, you see hundreds of perfectly styled designer houses, and then at dusk, these no-cost gray plastic eyesores are pulled down. A saw is not the end of the broom, but the chainsaw.

Maybe I didn’t express myself clearly. Aluminum roller shutter slats with motor for 2x 3m (10 feet) lift-and-slide door = €1770 net.
Electric venetian blinds for 2x 3m (10 feet) lift-and-slide door = €1890 net.

There is no room for interpretation or to call it an overpriced offer; otherwise, the venetian blinds would not be priced within the normal range.

Aluminum shutters just seem to be expensive.

I’m repeating myself:
we have 4 floor-to-ceiling windows plus a wide kitchen window with roller shutters. The additional cost for aluminum instead of uPVC was 440 net.
I don’t consider that expensive.
