Good morning,

I would like to hear your opinions on the choice of roller shutter slats, as I am uncertain about it.

We have to decide between aluminum or plastic roller shutter profiles for the upper floor.
I am leaning toward the cheaper option, simply because I think that if someone breaks in, they probably won’t put a ladder up against the house to get into the upper floor. I would choose aluminum where there is easy access.

Am I mistaken?

The burglar doesn't care whether there is a roller shutter or what material it is made of.

It takes exactly 2 seconds to pull the shutter panel out of the guides. We have aluminum everywhere; in my opinion, it simply looks better when everything is consistent.

Plastic becomes brittle over the years. After many years, some of the slats on the south side can sometimes crack.

Aluminum can be significantly louder than plastic when it rains.

Also, aluminum is considerably more expensive.

Regarding burglary protection:
A standard roll-formed aluminum roller shutter is not burglar-resistant!

I would keep it consistent at the top and bottom. How much do you actually save per window? Depending on the color/finish, aluminum looks better.

As already mentioned: aluminum roller shutters only delay a break-in by a maximum of 10 seconds.

Something else to consider: aluminum roller shutters with a slightly glossy finish reflect sunlight better and are said to heat up less.

Definitely uniform – we chose aluminum because it comes in RAL 7016 and not just white, gray, or black. The semi-detached neighbors have gray, and it looks really bad.

And it wasn't much more expensive, really – around €400 (about $440) extra for 4 floor-to-ceiling windows plus a wide kitchen window.
