Good morning,
I hope I won’t be immediately kicked out of the forum for asking this question. I’ve already used the search function extensively but couldn’t find a relevant thread—if this question has been asked recently, I would appreciate a link or a nudge toward the right search terms 🙂
Here is my issue: I’m looking for a good program to draw floor plans. Now, as we are working on the renovation, we’ve reached the point where multi-story planning is needed, including a new staircase. The “problem” is that the house is not just a simple house. Originally, it was a small house, and alongside it, a similarly sized barn was built; later, the two buildings were connected, and eventually an extension was added. Across the full width of the property, there is a slight bend, the rear has many protrusions, and inside on the ground floor, there are 3 different levels (each separated by one step); on the upper floor there is also a step in the living room and then another 3 steps leading to the extension.
The different levels aren’t the main focus to model precisely right now— it’s more important to be able to include the ground floor walls in the upper floor planning. Also, finding the right position for the new staircase will be tricky; I’m already struggling just on paper.
Can you give me tips on where I could find a good program? It can of course cost something, but I don’t want to spend thousands of dollars 😉

No, having two buildings doesn’t work well either, because you have to create connections between the buildings. You can get a rough approximation. It really depends on the template and the level of precision you want to achieve. You can manage it as a representation for yourself – but it’s not sufficient for calculations.
I still don’t understand what problem or solution is being represented here that can’t be done with pen and paper.
With Legos, I would probably have an issue with the curve the house has, and I would need many bricks for about 150sqm (1600 sq ft) of floor area per level.
I can’t manage drawing on paper. I have to admit: I’m a bit of a perfectionist. If the lines are uneven in thickness, the edges uneven, or if something needs to be erased, I might as well crumple up the whole sheet. On the computer, however, it’s no problem—I only briefly covered CAD during my training (I come from software development).
Well, the architect… our architect friend draws a room if needed, but not much more. He says it’s a Sisyphean task… Not very encouraging 🙁
If necessary, I’ll have to really break the house down into pieces. I’ll take a look at the programs mentioned here, maybe that will help me move forward 🙂
Thanks so much for your help!

So, using reinforced concrete is probably the easiest way to achieve the goal if you design all rooms on one floor with the maximum ceiling height and create different levels by adding built-in platforms. It could look like this:

The platform drawn in room 2 should then simply be shown as white without hatching in the illustration.

The goal in the medium term is to determine the position of the new staircase. Planning a "free" room, which is to be divided into a dressing room and bathroom, is also important. For the bathroom, it is essential to precisely define the location of the bathtub as well as the supply and drainage lines. In general, we need a plan that clearly shows at a glance what is located directly below or above a specific room.
