Hello,

the latest issue: The grout color was ordered incorrectly by the tiler. We met on site and agreed on the grout color "on the fly" using samples that we held directly against the tile. Everything seemed clear.

Now a different color has been grouted, which doesn’t look good.

Of course, nothing was documented in writing, but you would think that wouldn’t be necessary (or at least that’s what you’d hope).

The tiler suggested there is a grout color you can paint over it with.

Is that acceptable? I’m worried that using a grout saw to remove it would damage tiles or make it look even worse before.

It has happened so often that things were agreed verbally, sometimes twice, but then executed differently. You’d think that should be enough.
But in fact, you’d have to be on site every day to supervise the work, preferably before anything is done.

Yep,
tilers all seem to be colorblind. Ours started the same way back then. Tile color ivory – and he chose bright white for the grout and edges! Luckily, we were able to stop him in time and switched it.

You need to be on the construction site every day, scooter. You are the client. It’s your build. Seriously. I was there every single day, really at least early in the morning. That’s why such disasters could be stopped from the start. Otherwise, we would have had a door in the kitchen that would have clashed with the ordered fitted kitchen, sockets in the window frame—which is such a pointless idea!—ceiling outlets placed anywhere but centered, and so on.

I have a small child who I need to take care of in the mornings and then drop off at daycare. After that, I work until 6 p.m. or later. It’s almost impossible for me to be there every day. When I do go in the evening, “it” has usually already happened. Holes drilled in the wrong place, ceiling hung crooked, wrong network cables installed, uneven stair steps...

Even if I go again in the morning, “it” might not happen until 2 p.m.

My wife checks on things occasionally, but usually the mistakes are only noticed afterward, when it’s really too late. It actually seems unnecessary to keep going over things multiple times in advance and checking again. But apparently, it is necessary.

Regarding the current issue: Does anyone have experience with recoloring joints afterwards? Does the paint hold?

No, I wouldn’t go along with that. Is it regular joint compound or some kind of advanced dispersion-based product? I wouldn’t have the latter scraped off, but the former would be fine.

I messed up with the wrong paint here. From that point on, my wife took over everything related to painting.

I’m not familiar with jointing materials... As far as I know, the standard grout from the company Sopro.

I spoke with him, and he said coloring wouldn’t be a problem. You wouldn’t be able to wipe or scrape it off later because the color penetrates the grout and dyes the entire material.
