I am curious to know which ceiling height you chose and why.
If applicable, also from the basement if you built one.

3m (10 feet) on the ground floor, 2.7m (9 feet) upstairs. Would do it that way again! Very nice!I find that awful; where is the coziness on the ground floor with 3m (10 feet) ceilings?

Ground and upper floors: 2.50m (8 ft 2 in)
We didn’t want to pay an extra cent for higher ceilings. In houses with overly tall stories, it somehow gives off an office floor vibe in my opinion...

I measured a few friends’ rental apartments, and the ceiling heights are usually between 2.4 and 2.5 meters (7 ft 10 in to 8 ft 2 in).
If you want to include a dropped ceiling with recessed lighting or indirect lighting, a height of 2.7 to 3.0 meters (8 ft 10 in to 9 ft 10 in) seems reasonable!
Provided that this doesn’t lead to excessive costs in a new build, it’s definitely worth considering!

I wouldn’t do it just because of the spotlights. Raising the ceiling will cost you around €3,000, and lowering a whole floor costs a similar amount. You could buy many recessed fixtures for that price, even if you have to pay the high costs for prefabricated ceilings. As you mentioned, spotlights are meant for ambiance or focused lighting, not for illuminating large areas.
