ᐅ Construction Site Waste – What Is Acceptable?

Hello!

I had the landscaping contractor on site, and he told me to make sure that the general contractor leaves the construction site clean. He even said that if cigarette butts are left on the property afterwards, he would charge for waste disposal by subcontractors. Is that normal?

The general contractor, of course, says that he is not responsible for picking up his workers’ cigarette butts and considers small Poroton crumbs as acceptable residue left on the site. Now I’m not sure where exactly the line is—what does the general contractor have to do and what not? It’s actually quite simple: if I know what he is required to do, I can formally ask him to fully clean the property upon completing his work and report back to me. Then I can photograph any remaining debris, set a deadline for cleanup, and refer to deductions from the final payment if necessary.

Another point of discussion will definitely be all the “small” plaster residues in the bushes, etc.

How was it on your construction sites? The contract says nothing about this... sometimes you read about the interior being handed over “broom clean” — but I cannot find any similar term for final site condition outdoors and don’t know what is generally expected there.

A friend of mine had someone defecate on an unconnected ceramic surface. She was not very happy about it and had no joy cleaning up the mess...

So, at an acquaintance’s place, someone defecated on an unconnected ceramic toilet. She wasn’t very happy about it and certainly didn’t enjoy cleaning up the mess...

So, is she now also flicking cigarette butts into the environment?

chand, all good. I’m just having a bit of fun here with the image some users portray of themselves.

The chimney installer was more than enough for me—he defecated into the connected ceramic outlet at the bottom while there was still no trap installed at the top.

19 pages of nonsense posts and from page 20 it finally gets interesting. Thanks to the reports from construction workers who visit unfinished toilets!

Germany, a beautiful country, but with big problems

People, travel abroad sometime.

Really cigarette butts everywhere

But the thing with the beloved dogs is a very good comparison. I see many dogs pooping everywhere and the owners don’t clean it up.

A typical saying for those who don’t want to face the challenges in their own country: there is always something that is worse somewhere else – using that as a constant excuse to do nothing or to let things slide only leads to what is considered “normal” in certain countries. Do we want that? I don’t.

My approach is to start with yourself – that means no littering cigarettes, no throwing sandwich wrappers on the street, picking up dog waste responsibly, and so on.

If you do THAT, at least YOU have made a personal contribution to a healthier environment.

No matter how many pages are written on this topic: if someone dumps trash on MY property, I will address it (first politely, then more firmly if needed). Of course, you could always “turn the other cheek” and let people do as they please – those are probably the homeowners who pay invoices without question, make excessive advance payments, and then complain about defects (because they skimped on the expert inspections).

To a certain extent, the principle “he who pays the piper calls the tune” still applies – especially on a construction site.

The issues around waste really have little to do with construction itself but rather with upbringing or the ability or inability to behave “fairly” within a community.

There are certainly different opinions on this – and accepting that seems difficult for some here: similar comments appear in certain threads when a homeowner shares HIS opinion on something that some don’t like (like “I would do it differently” – that’s fine as a suggestion, but if a decision was made consciously, why complain about it constantly?). Everyone should do things the way they think is right – whether with building, tolerating, or not tolerating perceived or actual issues.
