So, I'm starting a new topic here to avoid overloading the house pictures thread.

I find the sliding doors for ovens quite interesting – but do they really offer any added value? I was also surprised to read that ovens now seem to be adopting a feature I dislike in microwaves: instead of setting temperature and possibly time, you input the "dimensions" of the food?! What is that supposed to achieve?! Personally, I think it’s terrible.

We don’t have pyrolytic self-cleaning. The oven is mine, so it doesn’t get dirty. I have never missed it either. Anything that might splatter goes on the gas grill. That’s where messes are allowed. Even there, it’s kept under control.

Of course, if it’s a Miele with all the extras, the oven costs €1500, but our Neff also has pyrolytic cleaning and Slide & Hide doors and costs €580. You just need to know what and how you’re buying. Do you want value for money or the premium brand without value for money?

My mother bought a combined ceramic hob and oven with pyrolytic cleaning from Siemens 20 years ago. It cost 5000 DM and still works today. It’s like with TVs back then. At that time, you had to spend about one month’s salary on something like that. Today, for one month’s salary, you can buy three sets (hob + oven).

Last year, we replaced our old AEG oven with a new Neff model. Slide and Hide, AquaClean, pyrolysis, the small display...

Online, I paid €675 including shipping and €75 for the pyrolysis-safe drawers. We installed it ourselves. I think the price is quite reasonable.

Now about cleaning. Half of the household only used AquaClean once and found it unnecessary. Traditional wiping is better. However, she is really impressed with the pyrolysis function, which we use about every three months. The interior looks almost like new.

Slide and Hide was not a requirement for us; the oven just happened to have it. In hindsight, I think the retractable door is great, even though our oven is installed under the countertop. My mother gets quite envious whenever she admires the oven during visits.

Pyrolysis is quite handy when something really goes wrong.
The NoFrost compartments in the refrigerator are great. Fruits and vegetables last significantly longer.

The Thermomix-ification of the oven world

That was a good one.

Last weekend at the butcher’s, a customer asked how to prepare the liver cheese.
Convection or top and bottom heat?
160°C (320°F) followed by checking after so many minutes, and adding more if needed.
Will future butchers pull out a tablet, connect it to the oven, and set everything automatically? Then, the customer even receives a reminder on their phone to put the liver cheese into the already perfectly preheated oven at 11:15?

Don’t online recipe sites already have links like “Buy Now”?

With pure online shopping, the experience with social interactions is missing.
What would a Friday be without stopping by the bakery, butcher, library, and feeding the ducks?

Do you know what annoys me about any household appliance?
There’s always some kind of beeping noise somewhere.

Last weekend at the butcher, a customer asked how to prepare the meatloaf.
Convection or top and bottom heat?
160°C (320°F) for so many minutes, then you check and add more time if needed.
Will the butcher of the future take out a tablet, connect to the oven, and set everything up? Then the customer would even get a reminder on their phone that the meatloaf really needs to go into the already perfectly preheated oven at 11:15?

...no, the meatloaf will have the appropriate QR code, which is scanned by the oven. Actually, what’s still missing is the device that moves the food from the refrigerator to the oven at the right time. Or maybe the oven with cooling function? Or the refrigerator with a cooking compartment? I’m curious to see what the future will bring.

What surprises me is why range hoods are so expensive. You quickly reach around 1000€ (about $1100). For that amount, you can get very well-equipped cooktops or ovens. And a range hood is usually seen more as an accessory.
