So, I'm starting a new topic here to avoid overloading the house pictures thread.

I find the sliding doors for ovens quite interesting – but do they really offer any added value? I was also surprised to read that ovens now seem to be adopting a feature I dislike in microwaves: instead of setting temperature and possibly time, you input the "dimensions" of the food?! What is that supposed to achieve?! Personally, I think it’s terrible.

The Thermomixification of the oven world

For all ovens newly approved from 2020 onwards, controlling them via an app on a smartphone or alternatively a smart home control panel is mandatory. Recipes are uploaded directly from the online database, and the necessary ingredients are automatically ordered from Am**** Fresh if the refrigerator detects that something is missing.

Well, that only applies to the ovens and the showcase refrigerators stocked with organic/lactose-gluten-sugar-free/vegan products in the demonstration kitchen, right? In the easy-to-maintain backup kitchen used for actual work, the appliances you can really use are hidden away from prying eyes…

Since an oven usually costs around 600 euros (about $650), but manufacturers want to make more profit, they offer the following features:

Slide&Hide, app control, 10D hot air circulation, Alexa voice control, pyrolysis, Swarovski crystals on the handle...

What I really find useful, however, is:
A coating for easy cleaning, at least 275 degrees Celsius (527°F), extendable rails, a good energy rating, and even heat distribution.

Do your ovens have a pyrolytic cleaning function? Do you use it? I have to admit that I never have any problems cleaning my oven – I just wipe it down and occasionally use an oven cleaner if needed. I have never missed pyrolytic cleaning – isn’t it quite a waste of electricity?

How do you actually use your ovens? With mine, there’s no wiping involved (and I definitely won’t spray chemicals into a combustion chamber where I prepare food).

Pyrolytic cleaning is mandatory 3 to 4 times a year. Yes, it uses a lot of electricity. But I roast whole birds on a tray, wings on the rack, spare ribs under the oven grill, and so on. And if I want to bake cakes and cookies as well, the oven has to be detoxed. In the past, without pyrolytic cleaning, I needed an hour to clean after roasting a whole goose. That’s not acceptable. With one burn-off cycle and a quick sweep, it’s like new.

I mentioned Slide&Hide. When cooking a 3kg (6.6 lbs) pot roast in a cast iron casserole, I appreciate every centimeter (inch) that brings me closer to the food. I don’t want to strain the telescopic slide, either. Also, transferring dishes directly from under the oven is easily done without obstacles. Since we often cook with two or more people, having an oven door open into the walkway—even for just 10 seconds—is not ideal.

By the way, I find the extra-cost NoFrost feature on freezers quite useful. You can live without it, but it definitely makes things more convenient.
