ᐅ Exterior venetian blinds – which manufacturer? What are the differences?

Hello!
We need external sun protection for our protruding bay window, which is made entirely of glass, to prevent heat from entering the house. All other windows already have electric roller shutters, but the bay window was left out, so this is where most of the heat gets in. (We just bought the house.)
I already have quotes from companies. The prices are mostly around 5500 euros. (3 sides, 360 cm (142 inches), 220 cm (87 inches), and 300 cm (118 inches), height about 240 cm (94 inches))
Since I don’t know much about the technology, I wonder if there are differences between Venetian blinds (also called blinds or louvered shutters)? Is one manufacturer better than another? Most companies offer Warema or Roma products. Which one is better?

All current quotes include remote control systems, but since we need to connect to electricity anyway, we don’t want a remote control feature.

I read something about CDL slats with Roma. Do these types of slats make more sense? In the quotes, the standard 80 mm (3 inches) slats were always specified.

Maybe you can give me some advice?

Thank you very much!

I will need to look up the price later. We only have two standard double doors, but they are also aluminum with tracks, and I believe they are flush-mounted (though they haven’t been installed yet, I just realized… hmm).

However, I would definitely recommend installing a wind sensor—otherwise, your expensive louvers could get damaged. The sensitivity can usually be adjusted, and the manufacturer likely provides specifications for what they can withstand. Given your length, they will probably need to handle more stress than our doors.

I didn’t know that was adjustable. Even better.

Thanks for looking that up.

I checked, but unfortunately I can’t tell you because our window type calculates the window and the roller shutter together as one position, so I can’t see which part is which. :/

That's a pity. Thanks anyway.

From what I’ve heard so far, Warema is considered to be of higher quality than Roma. But as I said, that’s just hearsay.
However, Warema’s brand name does come with a price premium. We had quotes for both Warema and Flexalum, and we will go with the latter since the prices were about the same. Flexalum is part of Hunter Douglas, which is the largest global supplier of sun protection and external venetian blinds. I believe I read that Warema also sources its slat profiles from Hunter Douglas. By the way, our external blinds, including motors and installation for the entire house (19 units, including 316x275cm (10ft 4in x 9ft), 310x275cm (10ft 2in x 9ft), 280x275cm (9ft 2in x 9ft), 290x120cm (9ft 6in x 3ft 11in), and (3x167)x275cm ((3x5ft 6in) x 9ft)) cost just over 8k.

Good morning Ruppsn,

That’s a good price! In our case, Roma is almost 4k more expensive than Warema. Do you have any new information or experiences/news about this by now?

Do you have an approximate price for me? @ruppsen as our “neighbor,” you should know the local price per m² (square meter) in our area, right?

I could give you a price for a double door 176x226cm (5ft 9in x 7ft 5in) or for a window 176x126cm (5ft 9in x 4ft 2in) if that helps?

Our external Venetian blind measuring 3m x 2.33m (9.8 ft x 7.7 ft) from Schlotterer, with rail guidance and the RetroLux slat, cost €2,200 each (without installation). However, this slat is the most expensive option in their range; I believe you can also get something similar for around €2,000.

In my opinion, a wind sensor is essential for external Venetian blinds. I don’t have much more to add on that, as we use a KNX weather station for this.
