We seeded the lawn 10 days ago (fall or spring wasn’t an option, as I didn’t want to chase the company multiple times or let the weeds take over). In any case, we are watering regularly whenever it doesn’t rain, and you can already see some green. Patience is not really my strong suit right now—I’m worried about the gaps so far (of course, I hope it looks better in another 10 days and becomes denser through mowing and branching out).
Anyway: when would you recommend overseeding? Before the first mowing? Or maybe only in the fall or next spring, when it’s cooler and requires less watering?

hemali200319 Jul 2018 19:25I would reseed any large bare spots right away. The rest can be done in the fall, which worked really well for us, and by spring it was already dense and very even. Seeding in summer is just a waste of water and an enormous amount of work.
I would have preferred it differently as well. But the alternatives (widespread use of Round-up or spending weeks pulling out every single weed, or still having no terrace or paving in summer) were not an option.
Besides, in April and May, the same amount of watering would have been necessary here anyway. :-(

In the front yard, we will heap soil in late autumn, level it out in early spring, and then sow grass. Hopefully, it won’t end up as hilly as the backyard...

Yes, we missed that. All the neighbors did too 😉 If you fertilize, then 1.5-2 times. Otherwise, it burns from the inside?I use about 50% of what is recommended on the package. Twice 100% in spring, then another 50% in October, so the lawn withstands frost better.
Good grief... it’s just grass. Last year, I overdid the fertilizer in some spots, and the grass there got burned. What can I say, eight weeks later those spots were green again without any intervention.
Once the first kids, dogs, or other household members start using the lawn, you won’t really mind any bare patches anyway 😉
I’m also curious how you water the soil without stepping on it. Use paddles (snowshoes) on your feet and water square meter by square meter with a fine spray. Otherwise, the seeds will just wash away.
