The staircase planned open into the living area is becoming more common again in modern floor plans. It’s not to everyone’s taste and isn’t always practical. But it can also greatly enhance the overall layout.
What do you think of this idea? What are the advantages and disadvantages of having the staircase in the living/dining area?
Here are a few examples:
Fingerhaus Fino 300, Danwood Park 181
Advantages
- often frees up space in the entrance area or sometimes even creates an additional room
- the upper rooms become more integrated into everyday life
- high-quality staircases become a focal point and can elevate the room’s appearance
Disadvantages
- noise from upstairs is always present throughout the house
- kitchen odors require an efficient ventilation system
- children’s guests inevitably meet the whole family (which can also be an advantage)

In the future house When will we actually get to see it presented?

Currently, we live in a duplex apartment. The living room is upstairs, and the bedrooms are downstairs. We can manage the noise level. You also have to consider all the houses with open spaces or galleries.
But yes, a separate staircase is quieter.
Still, I prefer an open design. I somehow like being able to go from the sofa to the bedroom without feeling like I’m leaving the living spaces through a closed staircase. But that’s a very personal feeling.
Another thing that comes to mind... we walk barefoot or in socks at home. Our entrance hall (with the basement stairs) is a closed area—shoe zone. As soon as you enter the living areas, it’s sock-only. (In winter, Birkenstocks or slide sandals are also allowed.) It’s a nice separation, and I don’t have to walk sock- or barefoot through the entrance hall where street shoes are sometimes worn.
@11ant What do you mean by the position of the photographer / placing the breakfast table? Is that referring to the example photo?

This applies to all example photos or model home-scenarios experienced by prospective homeowners that encourage the so-called must-have of a sculptural staircase. In everyday life, no one ever perceives it again from the optimal camera angle.

It’s a bit crazy and will cause some backlash, I think. I have always wanted to see a triangular castle like Plumpudding Castle here. The only backlash here comes from stair treads slippery in socks.

I grew up (as an only child) with an open staircase in the dining area, had an open staircase to the dining space in a terraced house, and now (without children) have a similar view as in the example fino (?) with the same type of staircase.
If a child should move into our house, the room with a guest toilet is located at the front near the entrance.
I am not familiar with anything else, don’t know of closed corridors or stairwells, and don’t want them either.
Children’s bedrooms can be easily relocated near the entrance area, while only the office space or parents’ wing would be accessible upstairs.
