Hello, dear forum members. I have been following the discussions for a long time and today I am reaching out to the community feeling completely unsure and indecisive.
We are planning our little house and are trying to decide whether to install tiles or hardwood parquet flooring. We want a consistent floor covering on the ground floor, except for the utility room and the guest toilet. The rest should have a uniform look. We are torn about what to choose. Tiles on underfloor heating are certainly better for heat conduction and probably easier to maintain. We still really like the oak parquet flooring in our condominium, where we currently live, as it creates a cozy and comfortable atmosphere. Moreover, the flooring specialist assured us during the selection process that the engineered parquet we have chosen conducts heat very well and can naturally be installed on underfloor heating. We do believe that.
Nevertheless...
We can’t decide and would like to hear your opinions about hardwood parquet in the kitchen and its practicality, in terms of maintenance especially.
Thank you very much so far, and we look forward to your thoughts.

We have had vertical grain hardwood flooring (American walnut) in our apartment for 8 years – even in the kitchen, as it is an open living/cooking/dining area. We will do the same in our house, but this time only oiled oak. Absolutely trouble-free, very comfortable underfoot, and the softer wood floor compared to stone flooring has a small additional benefit: if something falls (like glass or similar), there is a higher chance it won’t break. This has happened to us quite a few times. I can only recommend it, but I’m also not a fan of tiles in the dining room or living room – to me, they feel totally uncomfortable. It’s a matter of personal taste.

We are dealing with the same issue right now.

We only want tiles in the bathrooms and the utility room, as well as in the entrance area. The rest will be oak parquet flooring. We don’t want different floorings in the hallway and at the transition to the rooms.

Currently, we have an open kitchen in the living area (U-shape). Normally, tiles would need to be installed in the middle. However, this would disrupt the uniform look of the floor, so we will probably use parquet there as well.

I recently came across a thread on this topic...

We also have parquet flooring in the kitchen, which is completely hassle-free. The maintenance effort is naturally higher compared to tiles, but it is rewarded with a much more attractive appearance.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and opinions on this topic. We feel that our decision about the hardwood flooring is becoming more definite, and we understand that it requires more maintenance. However, the tiles we currently have in the kitchen are anything but easy to clean. In contrast, we find the hardwood flooring in the rest of the apartment incredibly easy to maintain.

We have tiles in the kitchen (open), guest bathroom, entrance area, and utility room; the rest is hardwood flooring.
I don’t want hardwood flooring in the kitchen because I find tiles easier to maintain and more durable. However, I’m not very fond of tiles in the dining and living areas.

The transition between the kitchen and dining area in our home is not very large.
