Hello everyone. We want to add an extension with a dining room and living room to our house. Due to the slope of the land, we cannot avoid having a basement. Since the basement will be "freestanding," we are considering using it as a bedroom or similar. What have we overlooked in our plans?

approximately like this:

Especially when I look at this three-dimensional design, I feel almost compelled to tear down the wall between the dining area and the kitchen and replace it with a kitchen counter accessible from both sides. Or at least reduce the wall height to the level of the countertop.

The pipe wouldn’t bother me if the wall stays. The question, however, is whether the oven would have a good spot in the kitchen there. I would rather say no.

... this will probably involve considerable work: after all, it is currently an exterior wall of the existing building (? ? ?)

I’m also concerned about a structural issue, especially since we already have to support the span of about 2.5 m (8 feet). The opening would of course be interesting. But even more openness could further affect the living comfort. We are already worried that this volume might feel unwelcoming.

I would be more worried about the lowered living room. I find it hard to imagine a cozy "nest" that is constantly visible from above.

I like the extension.
