ᐅ Are roof windows really not feasible with a roof pitch of about 12°?

Hello,

we have a single-pitched roof (with a weatherproof underlayment) with a slope of about 12° (a bit more). We would like to install a roof window in the stairwell area; however, our architect tells us this is not possible due to the slope (only from 15° upwards). Raising the gable to adjust the slope is not an option for building code reasons, as we would then exceed the maximum allowed height.

I did some research and so far only found windows from Vitral that are suitable for slopes between 0° and 30°, but the architect says these are only suitable for flat roofs, and so on.

Surely it must be possible to install a roof window on single-pitched roofs with a 12° slope — we can’t be the first in 2018, can we?

Is “roof window” the wrong term at a 12-degree pitch, and do you perhaps need a skylight instead?

Water tightness often comes with the trade-off that roof windows are suitable for different applications than rooflights. Will the window be used solely for daylighting, or also for ventilation? If it can be fixed (non-opening), the manufacturer may allow more flexibility regarding the possible roof pitch angles.

Actually, both are desired, but if both are not possible, then at least natural lighting... currently, a tapered frame is being discussed... wouldn’t that be a possible solution, or is there a more elegant option?

From the inside, it probably wouldn’t be visible anyway...

Of course, you would see it from the inside as well. That was my initial thought when reading, but even then the slope is borderline for effectively directing rainwater away from the wedge.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a representation of the house in your thread history to consider possible alternatives.
