Hello everyone,

We would now like to switch the window color from RAL 7016 to DB 703.
Now I’m wondering if I should also change the planned matte anthracite roof tiles to create a more harmonious overall look.

However, finding suitable roof tiles doesn’t seem to be that simple.
Has anyone else faced the same decision and might have a recommendation for me?

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,

Basically, RAL has a lower level of precision than Pantone, and many shades listed as "similar to" a RAL color don’t say that without reason – partly because they are only similar (but at least consistent), and partly due to some variability in the exact shade during manufacturing, where one batch can look noticeably different from the next.

Therefore, I think it’s important to avoid wishful thinking when expecting a perfect, pinpoint color match between a window frame and a roof tile. Differences in texture combined with varying lighting conditions also make color coordination challenging. Especially when two colors are meant to be very close, it can be unpredictable which one will appear darker under certain circumstances.

This reasoning applies similarly to coordinating window frames with floor coverings or cabinet fronts/kitchen countertops. The closer two colors are, the more likely they will sometimes appear not quite the same due to external factors. Even goals like “the roof being just a touch darker than the windows” are practically impossible to achieve precisely.

Yes, I am aware that a perfect fit is almost impossible. I think I will stick with the matte anthracite roof tiles, as the matte finish is by far not as dark as the glazed ones, and the planned photovoltaic system will probably be black as well.

This will likely create the best overall appearance. You have to make compromises somewhere.

Thank you for your help.

We also have the windows, front door, garage door, and garage entry door in DB703. The roof tiles are granite-colored from Braas. We like the color combination. DB703 is tricky anyway because each manufacturer has a different shimmer content in the color. This results in variations between our front door, garage door, and windows, as they come from different manufacturers. However, I don’t see this as a problem since they are not located directly next to each other. The color of the roof cornice still needs to be decided. In my opinion, different shades of gray can be mixed quite well.

Above all, I believe it’s better to choose colors boldly that clearly complement each other, rather than ones intended to look identical but never quite achieve it, since that would require ideal “laboratory conditions.”

For DB703, we have chosen the following brick: "Jacobi Walther, J11V Old Black" – it fits quite well. However, as with everything, this is of course a matter of personal taste.
