Hello,

I need to repair the mortar between the bricks of the basement ceiling and between the sandstone blocks of the foundation (both inside and outside) because the old mortar is very eroded and crumbling (house built in 1821).

An experienced mason probably has the right technique and wrist movement for this, using a pointing trowel, but I definitely do not.

There are “mortar guns” available on platforms like eBay for such joint work (sometimes overhead or vertical) that look like a cross between a firework rocket and a silicone cartridge (but larger). For example, there are models in yellow/black with a simple handle, and others in black/orange with a pressing mechanism. Are these tools suitable for a layperson like me?

I’ve also tried filling mortar into an old silicone cartridge to work with it that way, but nothing came out of the nozzle at all.

Does anyone have other tips on how to improvise here?

Thanks, Peter

Improvising in an area that affects the structural integrity of your entire building?

Oh no, a forum troll – my partner warned me about those :o

Is the joint sealant part of the structural stability? Was I planning to improvise with rice cakes or a thickening agent?
Please read what I wrote first, and then feel free to give a reasonable and appropriate answer. Don’t just take individual words out of context. It’s like investigative journalism.
