Hello everyone,
is it possible to roughly estimate the price difference between a slab-on-grade foundation and a full basement?
Assumption: house footprint 10.5 x 10.5 m (34.5 x 34.5 ft), excluding excavation work
When requesting quotes from home builders, the prices seem relatively high to me. The cost of the slab-on-grade foundation should basically be deducted since it is already included in prices without a basement.
Thanks

Those who can, have ... If I could, I would have a basement.

But for a flat plot, just building a hall with an underground utility room under the house doesn’t make sense in my opinion. Model train layouts have become quite outdated, as have fully equipped workbenches, especially since most people prefer to call a professional anyway. A basement can be a blessing, but it often ends up as decades of storage for clutter. I’d rather have only 127 sqm (1,367 sq ft) of basement space.

If you had needed one, yes. What do you mean by need? I would definitely use it: wine cellar, workbench, sauna cabin, whirlpool, guest room, storage for garden produce*, recording or hobby room, storage for Christmas ornaments, money storage, .............
Yes, all of this could also be above ground, but then the built-up area increases, and the neighbor immediately sees how big my palace is.
* I’m not even sure if modern basements within the thermal envelope of contemporary houses are as suitable for this as older basements used to be.

My basement stays at a constant 21°C (70°F). I can’t get it any cooler. If it’s not heated, then something might be wrong. Or where is the heat coming from?
