Hello everyone,

since I noticed the topic about stair dimensions in another thread and have been uncertain for a few weeks whether the stair measurements are acceptable, I’m bringing it here for discussion.

My only experience is with the stairs at my parents’ house, which are 2.30m x 1.65m (7 ft 7 in x 5 ft 5 in) and, in my opinion, comfortable to use.

Attached is the image with the measurements provided by the architect. The stairwell dimensions are exactly 2m x 2m (6 ft 7 in x 6 ft 7 in).

What do you think?

Or not. Then the handrail grinds against the next balusters

Ever tried to carry a piece of furniture up a stairway that only feels wide enough? I prefer real measurements, not just what feels right [emoji23]

I'm still managing to block that out pretty well.

We have a 2x2m (6.6x6.6 ft) box spring bed. Moving that is going to be fun!

Remove the staircase and install an elevator.

Although it would suit my cozy nature, unfortunately it is no longer financially feasible. The mortgage application is currently being reviewed by the bank.

Maybe a stairlift like the one in the ADAC magazine?

Well, that means the construction is getting closer – fingers crossed that nothing will have to be changed due to financing. After some time, I reviewed your house thread again and still believe that the planner did a solid job. There are minor details that I think could be done differently. It will be a house you will be happy with – even with the staircase layout unchanged as planned. A straight two-flight staircase instead of a winding one would require about eight to ten square meters (about 86 to 108 square feet) more floor space for the house, so nothing else would have to be compromised and the overall design remains balanced.

Modern bright wooden staircase with open steps, white railing, and plants in the background.
Thanks again for the feedback. We’re still happy with the floor plan. The staircase is just a bit of a concern for me—I find it quite intimidating (see attachment – it even looks wider than 2m (6.6 ft)). But the floor plan takes priority.

The building authority said we could start around mid to late March. The architect says it will be more like June or July. So, construction delays due to slow site development :-(.

Do you have any ideas or pictures of how we could fit a more attractive staircase in there?

40 cm (16 inches) less kitchen space wouldn’t bother me, but the room upstairs will be the second children’s bedroom...

Now I must have missed something. It says there are 2 children and no more are expected. Upstairs, there are two children’s bedrooms shown and the study room. I assume the rooms are meant to be swapped, or has a child been added after all?
