ᐅ Roof Covering – Looking for Your Advice

Hello everyone,

We are currently at the stage of selecting finishes. Regarding the roofing, we are quite neutral emotionally, but we are interested in understanding the differences. The color should be granite or anthracite (both look identical in the pictures?), but maybe deep black as well. Can anyone help us decide?

I can’t see that the colors look identical, and I suspect you compared Google images instead of visiting the manufacturer’s website. There, you would also notice clear differences in the profiles and, most importantly, that your list compares apples and oranges: positions 1 to 3 are roof slates, while positions 4 and 5 are roof tiles. Harzer and Frankfurter refer to different “profiles.” The numbers 7 / 9V / 13V indicate the approximate number of slates or tiles per square meter, so a higher number means a smaller slate or tile.

For the dark gray shades, you don’t really have a choice, as there is only one in each case – although sometimes in different surface finishes. Besides the fact that I personally find black unattractive here, I advise against it for a practical reason: it doesn’t stay “perfectly black” forever (unless you wash the roof every Saturday), so I think a dark gray is the better option.

Thank you! That already helps a lot. Price-wise, options 1 to 4 are very close to each other. Assuming we don’t care about the profiles, which number would be the "best" choice in terms of weather resistance and wind resistance?

No. The use of clay tiles is really just about aesthetics. A concrete block holds up just as well against weather and storms. Seriously. Storm resistance mainly depends on the fastening system.

Depending on the roof shape, you might never see the roof again.

But whatever you choose, make sure to go for an engobed surface.

Then I would conclude that you haven’t dealt much with the topic yet. Depending on the roof shape, different "wavelengths" of a roof tile profile can visually suit certain roof pitches better. Of course, you can also neglect this or have little opinion about it – but for the overall aesthetics, it’s basically the same as if the color didn’t matter. If the roof is meant to look "nice," I would therefore pay attention to both parameters.

Which would imply choosing tiles.

Many manufacturers of roof tiles and roof shingles, as well as many building material suppliers, have sample areas. Where these are outdoors, you can see in real life how each option looks “in the wild” and weathers over time. Similar setups in showrooms or indoor displays are, in my opinion, less informative since the main advantage over a brochure is the 1:1 scale. Colors appear different under artificial lighting, and it’s difficult to assess durability without exposure to weather.
