Hello, my husband and I have the opportunity to purchase a 10-year-old house. The previous owners stated that the monthly gas costs are around 220 EUR per month. The living area is 250 sqm (2,690 sq ft), so it’s quite large. What would be a realistic kW rating for a house of this size?

Such information should always be regarded with extreme caution, as the user behavior is completely unknown!

What amount of kW can be considered realistic for this size?

kW is a unit of power, not energy (kWh)! When buying an existing property, you should always consult a professional to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Best regards.

I would get an energy performance certificate, or at least inquire if one is available. But not a consumption-based one—preferably a component-based certificate!

Thank you very much for your quick responses! The suggestion about the energy certificate is a good tip; I hadn’t thought of that. We will ask the owners if one is available.

For my new build, I am covering my monthly natural gas costs with a prepayment of 50€ (approximately $54), combined with 10.5 m² (113 sq ft) of solar panels and a low-temperature ventilation system with heat recovery.

There is a legal entitlement to this! Make sure it is a consumption-based certificate!
