ᐅ Designing a Small Guest Bathroom – Is There Still Room for a Urinal?

Hello everyone,

Since we already received great help designing the main bathroom, we need your assistance once again for the guest bathroom. :-) My husband would like to have a urinal. However, I don’t see any available space for it. If we place the toilet and the urinal along the 1.20 m (4 feet) wall instead of the washbasin, it will probably be quite tight, right? We recently saw a similar layout in a bathroom showroom, which, of course, encouraged my husband to believe the space should be sufficient.

I find it funny that people wish for something just because others have it.
Something to think about 😉

Well, I think that’s okay. Often (if not always?), the start of a desire is seeing something ‚somewhere‘ and then wanting to have it. How else would you get ideas?
Personally, I would question the urinal overall for hygiene reasons and therefore probably also the homeowners who have one :-)

Once you accept that rows of men will use the guest toilet for standing urination, I think a urinal is a practical solution. It simply results in less splashing.
“Private urinals” don’t look like the ones at rest stops either. They have a nicer design, often with a lid. That makes a big difference.

We once had a case where a woman wanted to install a toilet in her garden shed because the male guests had started using a urinal channel there, and it was getting quite smelly in the garden... of course, that only treats the symptoms, but you can’t win every battle 🙂

Didn’t you swear at birth to keep the last few secrets of our gender?!

I can share some practical experience based on the following layout:

Bathroom floor plan with toilet and washbasin in architectural drawing

The room is approximately 205cm (81 inches) wide and 220cm (87 inches) long. The marked shower enclosure is not installed and will at most be added later as a half-size, foldable cabin.

At first, I was concerned about the proximity between the urinal and the toilet; however, this is no longer an issue due to the existing urinal cover. A distance of 15cm (6 inches) between the toilet and the wall is sufficient.

In practice, I hardly ever use the urinal myself – but our guests appreciate it very much.

For me, it’s not a true must-have, although I don’t regret having one. I see it as a status symbol among friends 😀.

Okay, with the lid it looks clean. Somehow, I still find it a bit odd. Probably because I’m a woman and a bit jealous not to be able to use it myself. Maybe I should ask Freud. 😉

That’s really strange. I don’t mind cleaning my guest bathroom, but I would be disgusted by that thing. Who cleans it at your place?

In the past, people used to put small stones in there that looked like ice cubes and had a soapy smell. We used to grab those out late at night in the club and put them into the drinks of some silly guys... yeah, what fun.
