the087Hello everyone,
I had a clogged drain in my shower and tried to fix the problem using a plunger. Unfortunately, a lot of fine, black, sand-like particles came up. Now I'm worried that the water pipe from my drain might be slowly deteriorating.
Has anyone had a similar experience? What could this black sand be? Do I need to call a plumber, or is there another way to solve this issue?
I really hope someone can help.
Best regards,
Manni

lots of fine, black, sand-like granules That sounds like coffee grounds. If the sink drain is nearby and cups used for brewing coffee without a filter are rinsed out, the grounds initially collect in the P-trap of the sink drain. Subsequent water surges then stir them up but only carry them a short distance further. If there is a shower drain close by that also adds hair to the mix, it creates a perfect “reinforced” coffee sludge inside the pipe. With very hard water, this stuff turns concrete gray and also becomes a special treat for sensitive noses.
Drain pipes themselves do not break down into soot particles or anything similar.
