Hello everyone,
We are building with a general contractor, and the standard tiles offered are 30x60cm (12x24 inches). However, we would prefer a wood-look tile in the size 30x120cm (12x48 inches). We need to negotiate the additional cost with the tiler. We have now received the extra charge: the tiler is asking for €26.30 per m² (excluding VAT) for installation. I understand that it takes longer to lay these tiles, but €26.30 per m² (about €30 including VAT) seems quite expensive to me. The tiler also installed the screed.
Am I mistaken here?
Looking forward to your feedback.

Hello
you just have to lay out the calculations: Larger tiles mean more weight. You might need to use lifting equipment. This extra effort comes at a cost.
Now the counter calculation: With larger tiles, the installation work is completed faster. There is less cutting involved. Less grouting is required.
In fact, the price per square meter for installation should be lower with large tiles.

Hello Curly
This will be included in the bill.
However, why should the adhesive be different for larger tiles? The thickness of the adhesive layer should also remain the same. The waste or cut-off material can be more, but it doesn’t have to be. It can also be less. Proper planning is required.
Regarding the second person, I agree with you. My tile installer came with a second person right away. That was the usual practice, no matter the tile size.

But why should the adhesive be different for larger panels?
StevenThere is a special adhesive for large-format tiles. Because of the weight of the large panels, the adhesive doesn’t get pushed down as much. The adhesive also needs to dry differently since there are fewer grout joints with large tiles, and the regular tile adhesive wouldn’t dry properly in the center of the panels, the tiler explained to me.
Best regards,
Sabine
Hello Curly,
ok. This needs to be included in the calculation.
I still doubt that the additional cost of nearly 30 euros per m² (roughly 3 ft²) for installing large-format tiles compared to smaller ones is justified. I assume the tiler is simply charging extra without basis.
