ᐅ Gas and electricity consumption in new construction

Hello everyone,

We are planning to switch our electricity and gas providers. To start: yes, I know you can’t generalize for every household, so I’m interested in average values. Here’s our situation:
- House size: 163 sqm (1755 sq ft)
- No basement
- 2 adults
- 1 child (1.5 years)
- Underfloor heating

For average electricity consumption, we are using local comparison websites. They suggest about 4250 kWh per year.
However, we’re having more trouble estimating gas usage. What values have you used, and how did that work out for you? Did you tend to underestimate or overestimate? The recommendations for gas vary widely. Some sources say 20,000 kWh for a single-family home with 4 people, others suggest 30,000 kWh for a single-family home with 2 people.

On the one hand, I don’t want to be unnecessarily financially burdened month to month, but on the other hand, I want to avoid a large additional payment after a year.
Does anyone have experience or advice on what is a reliable approach or good estimates to use?

I understand it depends on individual living situations—some like it cozy warm all year, others only turn the heating on when it’s at 0°C (32°F). I’m not looking for exact figures, but rather experiences regarding typical annual consumption.

Hello Sauerpeter,

Electricity: The main consumers are the ventilation system, chest freezer, and refrigerator – in that exact order. If you have all these appliances, you can expect up to 5,000 kWh (5,000 kWh) annually. The ventilation system alone accounts for 900 to 1,500 kWh (900 to 1,500 kWh). In our first year, total electricity consumption was 4,400 kWh (4,400 kWh).

Gas: Hot water usage is significantly less important compared to heating. In the first year, we set the heating a bit cooler (around 22 degrees Celsius (72°F)) and used about 23,000 kWh (23,000 kWh) for approximately 265 square meters (2,853 square feet) of heated area. According to many experiences, the first year usually involves higher heating demand because the house still contains a lot of moisture in the walls.

Now the heating is set a bit warmer because sometimes it felt a little too cold (around 23.5 degrees Celsius (74°F)). Hopefully, the walls are somewhat drier by now. If we maintain consumption at about 23,000 kWh (23,000 kWh) again, I would be quite satisfied.

Costs: Using relevant comparison websites, we estimate electricity costs around 90 euros per month and gas costs about 70 euros per month.

Heating system choice: For those who haven’t started building yet, I suggest considering investing a bit more in a good heating unit. A good system can quickly heat a small storage tank (for example, 150 liters (40 US gallons)) and provide hot water for 2 or 3 showers while remaining very economical over the months.

Electricity: Traditional incandescent bulbs no longer belong in the house. --> LED

Best regards

By now, we're tired of "saving." We may be Swabians, but above 23°C (73°F) is comfortable. And my better half works at the swimming pool.
So far, our monthly energy consumption for hot water, heating, and ventilation has been under 200 kWh. That is acceptable.

Since January, we have used about 1,400 kWh of electricity and 7,000 kWh of heating energy. Our low electricity consumption surprises me, especially since we dry almost all our laundry in the dryer. It is probably due to the new cooling appliances and many LEDs. Two adults, two children, 200 m² (2,150 sq ft), 23°C (73°F).

Sorry, but that's just nonsense in general.
Our central ventilation system with controlled residential ventilation consumes about 1 kWh per day (operates 24/7). That means about 365 kWh per year.

This is also normal and matches the manufacturer's specifications. Merlin's consumption is beyond all reason.

Thank you all for the many responses. Some of the answers were exactly what I expected. And even if it might all be guesswork and varies from family to family, it has helped to get a rough idea.
