Hello,

I originally planned to install laminate flooring throughout the entire living area, but during a consultation, I was told that tiles are better for underfloor heating. They warm up faster and retain heat longer, which is also more efficient in terms of energy consumption. They also mentioned that in their own home, they have tiles everywhere except for the kitchen, where there is laminate, and that spot is always the coldest.

Is this a significant difference? I could install laminate myself, but tiling seems different.

Tiles are better in this regard, yes. But laminate works as well. Manufacturers indicate whether their products are suitable for underfloor heating. Additionally, bonding floor coverings (if possible) is recommended, as this also improves heat transfer. And if additional impact sound insulation is used, make sure it is also suitable for underfloor heating.

Who installs tiles everywhere and then uses laminate specifically in the kitchen? Some things you just don’t understand...

The sales consultant did it that way himself.

How much difference does it actually make if the laminate is glued down? (Is gluing something a layperson can manage, or is it better to just lay it normally, as I’ve done so far?)

My wife prefers tiles with a wood look, but currently we have high-quality laminate installed in our apartment – I tend to be more in favor of laminate. In my opinion, laminate also feels warmer when the heating is off. Regarding signs of wear, I understand that with two kids, even the best laminate won’t stand up to everything =)

I mainly see the cost factor – since tile installation should be done by a professional plus the cost of materials, I’m easily looking at at least double the price compared to laminate. For 120 m² (1,292 sq ft) of flooring, that’s quite a lot.

90-100 €/m² (8.40-9.30 USD per sq ft) with 35 €/m² (3.25 USD per sq ft) tiles

So, having tiles installed costs 12,000 euros at 100 euros per square meter (approximately 9.3 USD/ft²) – with laminate, I only have the material cost per square meter, which ranges between 10 and 20 euros (about 0.9 to 1.9 USD/ft²) depending on quality, so roughly one-fifth of the cost.

Impact sound insulation?
Baseboards?

+ "own labor" vs. "is completed"
