ᐅ Cost Comparison for Exterior Walls – Stucco or Wood

Hello,

I am looking for a rough cost comparison between a plaster facade and a timber facade. The focus should be purely on material costs, based on an already insulated solid brick wall. Installation effort, maintenance, costs for scaffolding and labor, etc., should be disregarded.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any useful information online :/

Goodness.... roughly.... I said ROUGHLY
There are countless combinations of both options.
Let’s just try to keep it simple

Plaster: reinforcement plaster with mesh 15mm (0.6 inches) plus basic colored finishing plaster without special properties.
Wood: substructure including fasteners as well as vertically installed standard panels including wood stain
Wind load zone 2

It feels like wood/panels as a material would be more expensive. It’s hard to say exactly how much, as it depends on the type of wood.

I also don’t understand why other factors, such as installation effort, shouldn’t be considered, especially since labor costs usually exceed material costs. Even then, I would have assumed wood is more expensive.

You can ask both questions on Wednesday with two quick calls to contractors. Just a rough estimate.

As you’ve already noticed yourself: Plaster is applied directly onto the wall (plaster = 1x material, onto the wall = 1x labor); wood (1x material) is applied to a substructure (again 1x material) – both involve labor.

So, in total: plaster = 1x material + 1x labor versus wood = 2x material + 2x labor. Assuming – to keep it rough – that labor costs are equal in all compared parts, wood would have to be 1x labor cheaper than plaster in order not to be more expensive overall.

This is logic, it’s a principle. It doesn’t change even at the hundredth decimal place, regardless of the (precise or rough) actual figures.
Clear enough in general?
