ᐅ What height should the visible base or plinth of a house have?

Hello,
we now need to decide on the height of the visible base plaster on the house. What would be the ideal height? Is 30cm (12 inches) acceptable, or would more be better? In some new development areas, you often see lower base heights of around 20cm (8 inches), but wouldn’t that cause the light-colored plaster to get dirty more easily?
What have you done, and are you satisfied with it?

At the time, I just quickly checked the construction site during my lunch break to see how things were progressing. The plasterer asked me the same question... Whether I wanted to decide right then, and it was actually much more difficult to set the height because the entire ground hadn’t been filled yet.

For us, it was about 35cm (14 inches)... this seemed to be the standard with our builder, so I stuck with that.

I then based the height on the front door and patio door. If you set it too low, the base (plinth) is too small, which I don’t like... if you set it too high, you can sometimes see the end of the colored render in the gravel strip (which I’ve also seen with some neighbors).

Even more? Starting from the terrain at floor level, with 90cm (35 inches) high parapets, 30cm (12 inches) would already be one third, and only twice as much above that :-(

I would rather adjust the gravel strip than make the house look like it’s wearing "flood pants."

The absolute height also makes a significant difference depending on its proportion to the “wave pattern” of the terrain. In this context, 20cm (8 inches) on flat land looks visually as high as 30cm (12 inches) on more varied terrain.

With pictures of the building, one could give a more case-specific opinion.

As a builder, do you really have to worry about such nonsense? I think this is just busywork from the companies to keep us occupied. My answer to the question was, no idea, please just proceed as usual. Karsten

With us, a lot was built without visible plinths. The plaster stops below ground level.
We were told this is the common practice nowadays.
In my opinion, this looks much better than a visible plinth in subtle gray.

Homeowners are all very different. I also wanted to be involved in decisions about details like these. Even though most of the time my answer was the same as yours. But at least it’s worth thinking about them once.
