Hello!

It looks like we are building a house with a hip roof. There are various pitch angles that such a roof can have.

We prefer a shallower pitch, like the one on the pink house directly opposite. The more common option seems to be the steeper pitch shown on the house to the left.

The architect already mentioned that the shallower pitch is the more expensive option. Are there any other advantages or disadvantages to consider when choosing between these, aside from possible building permit or planning permission issues?

Hello
On one hand, the roof pitch is an aesthetic aspect; on the other hand, the pitch determines the usability of the attic. For example, if you want to convert the attic into living space or have a large usable area (as a basement replacement), you will need a steep pitch.

Well, you have more storage space otherwise [emoji2]

I also prefer the flatter version.

The roof pitch could also be important for the optimal orientation of a solar or photovoltaic system.

You know the project we are talking about. There is no longer any need for storage space under the roof.

The architect has suggested including preparation for a photovoltaic system for the future. He hasn’t discussed any connection between the two roof pitches with us yet.

Just try a quick search for optimal roof pitch for photovoltaics.
