Hello everyone,
Is it possible to build without following the energy saving regulations?
I want to avoid unnecessary insulation and similar measures. At the same time, I want to maintain the great indoor climate that exists in this building from 1959.
Although it was barely insulated, the house remains completely dry and the indoor climate is excellent.
I am planning to build an extension that fits this outstanding indoor climate. All these modern insulation methods are not helpful in this case.
Does anyone have some kind of exemption from the energy saving regulation and can share how they obtained it?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards

When I talk about climate, I don’t mean just the indoor air quality, but also the overall feeling inside the rooms.
It’s quite different standing in a bunker compared to a “normal” room, even if the indoor climate is adjusted to the same level through certain technologies.
I don’t like being completely isolated. I prefer spaces that feel airy and open. In winter, I enjoy being cozy and warm by the fireplace.
If someone can convince me that I can get that cozy, snug feeling in a new house built to current energy efficiency standards, that would be great. However, I don’t want to spend money on technical gadgets if I can achieve this “climate” naturally.

Could you please define that using objective parameters, or does that tend toward esotericism?
I couldn’t tell with my eyes closed whether I am in a building constructed to an energy saving regulation / building energy code or not. At least not without existing construction defects.
Hi Lumpi,
Really? I thought, based on what the builders said, that I:
- MUST insulate the roof of the main house
- Need a new heating system for the 85sqm (915 sq ft) main house (gas, last replaced in ’89)
- The new extension (about 70-80sqm / 750-860 sq ft) must be fully insulated and equipped with solar panels
Are these just typical sales pitches looking for someone to take advantage of, or is there accurate expertise behind this?

I couldn’t say with my eyes closed whether I’m in an energy regulation-compliant house or not. At least not without existing construction defects. Hello 77.willo,
With the same temperature and humidity, in my opinion, I can still tell whether I’m standing in an air raid shelter or a barn. That has very little to do with esotericism. Several factors come into play—not just temperature and humidity.
And even if we assume the feeling is completely identical, meaning the "standard house" and the "energy regulation-compliant house," why should I then spend tens of thousands of euros more for the same result/feeling?
Could you explain this to me using objective parameters?
