Hello,
we are building a semi-detached house with around 150 sqm (1,615 sq ft) of living space and a 200 sqm (2,153 sq ft) garden. The contract will be signed next week, and construction will start in late autumn. We have chosen the “technical completion” stage and will do some of the work ourselves: flooring, tiling, sanitary fixtures, attic finishing, interior doors, landscaping, and painting.
We have done our homework for the financing and negotiated extensively with the builder, so we now have a good price.
As you know, building a house always takes quite a toll on the budget, so we are now focusing on the details and where we can save costs. What are your experiences? For example, regarding:
And so on…
I’m looking forward to your experiences!

- Where to get sanitary fixtures cheaply? Also, are branded products really worth it?
- Likewise, kitchen appliances – is there a good way to find display models?
- How have you managed to do landscaping cost-effectively?
- Where and how to buy doors at a low price?
And so on…
I’m looking forward to your experiences!
But not if you’re really good at getting your paws dirty when cleaning cod, peeling new potatoes, doing wet grinding on bronze propellers, and so on. A utility room sink is basically the natural ventilation system for rural households.
It was a nice day. Sunny, little wind, a bit cold, but earlier I had two rounds in the sauna, enjoyed a nice chat in the steam room, ate tortellini with white sauce, and now just finished the last marzipan. Karsten

Seriously: In decisions as subjective as this, you really can’t call it “smart” savings. What one person considers a “clever saving” is a functional or aesthetic deal-breaker for someone else. Reducing costs while maintaining the same quality is achieved by comparing prices, negotiating, and leveraging synergies. In my opinion, this is always underestimated in house construction. Having the earthworks for the garden done by the shell builder right away is a good example. We even coordinated some of the landscaping work with our neighbors, and each saved a thousand on the retaining wall blocks, about 30% in total.
Statements are always subjective. No matter who says what here, it is always their truth, never the absolute truth. Especially cost-saving suggestions are highly subjective, including the story about the civil engineer. There may be construction companies that charge a premium for every extra feature because they hardly make any profit on the standard work. Others, however, do such work at a fair price, making it worthwhile.
I think we don’t need to write for the general public but rather be helpful to the original poster. They want to save money, after all. It’s up to them to decide whether they consider the pool important or not.
And a small grammar mistake— you know, that’s something you just overlook because everyone makes mistakes. The dative and accusative cases will survive; the genitive is the endangered one. Karsten

Recently, we had a tenured teacher here who hadn’t read the instructions on the genitive case.
