ᐅ Do I need an interior designer or an interior decorator?

Hello everyone.
We want to redesign our kitchen, dining room, and living room. We already have various ideas for flooring, kitchen design, and wall decoration, but we need someone with experience to bring it all together and visualize our ideas for us (3D CAD).
I am skilled in DIY and enjoy hiring and coordinating craftsmen, so I don’t want to give up that part. What we are really looking for is someone who can develop the concept with us and then provide us with the plan for execution.
I have read the definitions of an interior architect as well as an interior designer, but neither of these professions seem to fit my situation.
Who can help me in this case?

You are in good hands with an interior designer 🙂
Most people who have completed this degree work freelance and are very open to individual arrangements (agreeing on a flat rate).
Another tip: find a home stager! These are usually interior designers, but we live in an era where freelancers constantly need to reinvent themselves in the market 🙂

This is probably because, strictly speaking, you need both types of professionals. You _could_ also hire a Feng Shui consultant, among others; it really depends on your personal preferences. I see home stagers as less relevant here; they mainly enhance properties to be sold and might offer tips.

If you just want to see your ideas turned into a drawing, check out the market for standalone room design software, such as SketchUp and similar programs.

Thank you for the quick responses. I will contact an interior architect. Interior decorators probably do not go in-depth enough and seem more focused on execution, which I actually want to handle myself or at least commission.

According to Wikipedia, the definition of:

is the beautification (cleaning, furnishing, accessories, etc.) of rental properties without major or deeper alterations, which is not what I am looking for. Yvonne, do you know of a different definition?

What I am looking for is someone who deals with color, shape, and design of floors, walls, ceilings, kitchen, doors, fireplace, room dividers, etc. We will take care of furnishing as well as selecting and placing accessories ourselves. It seems that an interior architect is the right contact person for this.

I’m repeating myself: interior designers cannot survive in this economy. So, over time, they have started offering home staging services.
Home stagers apply the exact same knowledge that is either gained during interior design studies or acquired through specialized courses.
Space, aesthetics, surfaces, color...
...
It doesn’t matter whether you plan to continue living in your house or want to sell it – design is the key focus.
