my wife and I moved into our new house earlier this year. However, we have now realized that the sunlight on our terrace is too intense, and we would like to find a long-term solution to this problem. Our first thought, of course, was: We need a parasol. But... we have already had many parasols in our apartment and unfortunately broke quite a few. Now we are considering installing an awning. Initially, that seemed like a brilliant idea, but then we realized, first, that we don’t really know much about awnings, and second, that we’re unsure whether they can be installed easily.
As the latter question suggests, we would like to ask: How is an awning installed? How much does an awning cost? Which manufacturers are reliable, and which ones should we probably avoid?
We appreciate any answers! 🙂

First, check if an awning would actually be helpful for you. For example, we have a west-facing side where the sun sets so awkwardly in the evening that a standard awning wouldn’t be sufficient. It would need to extend downwards. We haven’t yet found the perfect solution for our situation.
Otherwise, awnings vary in price depending on size, whether they are motorized, and so on. Installation complexity also varies depending on the wall construction behind them.
Additionally, you should consider in advance if you might want a covered terrace in the future. Several neighbors in our development have added this after two years. It’s better to plan for it as a combined solution.
So far, we haven’t been able to decide on either an awning or a roof structure, so for now we’ve stuck with a standard cantilever parasol.

as already mentioned, a lot depends on the wall structure.
However, you can attach an awning to almost any wall construction. For some wall types it is simply more complicated than for others, but a professional company specializing in sun protection who knows their craft should always find a solution.
The period from mid to late October is quite a good time to buy/order an awning – keyword “winter prices”… 😉
For example, the awning in our “old” apartment was fixed to a masonry wall with external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS). For this, there were special anchors and screws that pass straight through the insulation and only grip in the masonry.
Our current house (timber frame construction) has been fitted with a so-called Kerto beam – a special (multi-layered) engineered wood product that runs at the appropriate height along our entire south-facing façade, allowing our awning installer to attach the awning easily.
As @Musketier already pointed out, you definitely need to consider whether, for example, the evening sun shines under the awning and possibly install appropriate additional equipment.
We have had very good experiences with products from the company “Markilux.”
