ᐅ Flooring. Laminate, engineered hardwood, vinyl? Where is the best place to buy?

Hello,

for our new single-family home, we are looking for suitable floor coverings. On the ground floor, the choice is fixed with a view to the entrance/terrace to the garden/fireplace: tiles. There will also be tiles in the basement. The house will have underfloor heating with an air-to-water heat pump.

Now we are considering what to put upstairs (children’s bedrooms and ours) as well as in the attic (gallery). Regardless of price, I find parquet problematic in playrooms, but ideally, the flooring should be uniform throughout the floor, look like wood, and be somewhat warm underfoot.

The price should be a maximum of 35 €/sqm (about $37/sqft) and it should be possible to install it ourselves. It should also match the solid walnut staircase.

What would you choose/recommend? Laminate, cheaper engineered wood flooring, or even vinyl? And where is the best place to buy? Which manufacturers have a good reputation?

For us, it certainly doesn’t go that smoothly (we’ve had the floor for 10 years). A damp, foggy cloth just doesn’t slide over the floor as easily as a wet cleaning cloth over tiles. I find it quite exhausting!

Best regards

Oiled parquet requires completely different care compared to waxed or sealed parquet. Therefore, general advice on how to maintain “parquet” is not possible. One must distinguish between sealed, waxed, or oiled surfaces.
Have you already researched how to care for tiles and the differences between porcelain stoneware and ceramic tiles? Every type of flooring requires appropriate cleaning using suitable products.

So, you will need to spend quite some time dealing with this, not just for parquet.

Since I’m not fully up to date: Have you actually started building yet, or are you still in the planning phase?

At the moment, site development is still ongoing. I expect construction to start in spring 2017. We have time to plan (electrical, plumbing, etc.) until December/January, then we want to apply for the loan (after that, the house shouldn’t become more than around 50,000 EUR more expensive...).

Hm Grym, have you now been convinced to go for real wood flooring?
I haven’t so far. Of course, it’s great to have a natural floor in the house, but the fact remains that wood flooring is more sensitive than vinyl, while vinyl can be more harmful in other ways.
How does vinyl on HDF (high-density fiberboard) behave in terms of floor coldness? It should definitely be warmer than laminate or hardwood flooring, right?
Is it really practical to install bamboo parquet over underfloor heating? Doesn’t this type of wood actually contribute to slowing down the heat output of an underfloor heating system, which is already slow to respond? Are there any experiences comparing it with laminate and vinyl? Theoretically, laminate should insulate even more, right?

I’m also curious to know what it turned out to be.

@ RobsonMKK, I’m also asking where/how to find such bargains.
€60 parquet for €30...

@DerZert Take a look at Holzprofi24; they have it available from time to time.
