Hello, we really like paved paths and surfaces. We already have them. However, what really bothers us is how quickly the joints fill with persistent weeds, and after 16 years, the algae growth (circular patches) has become unattractive. This algae is very firmly attached and can hardly be completely removed anymore.

My question is: Are there any recent developments to control both issues? Otherwise, what would be an alternative to paving? It should definitely be durable and low-maintenance, as the areas are large. Best regards, Steffi33.

Instead of using a weed control fabric, you can simply use a 0/32 gravel base. On top of that, add 5cm (2 inches) of crushed stone before laying the paving.

You said it yourself: weed seeds always come from above – eventually, you have to clean the joints.
I also find the algae very unpleasant; as far as I know, they only occur on concrete paving.

Otherwise, you buy a burner and just burn it off... we do that from time to time.

Just be careful with the thing.

Does it still allow rainwater to pass through?

I can tell... nothing really new has happened in this area yet...

Oh no, never again gravel in the joints... it pokes into the rubber soles and you constantly track those sharp-edged stones into the house...

Yes. However, you will inevitably get quite a strong haze that is difficult to remove depending on the surface texture.
