Hello

We want to plant a roughly 45-meter (150-foot) long area with plants that provide privacy screening. We are considering Thuja Smaragd. They should be relatively low-maintenance and offer good privacy.

Do you have any other suggestions?

I wouldn't recommend using cherry laurel.

It's neither ecologically beneficial nor truly easy to maintain and attractive (the latter two only if you keep it well-trimmed).

I would rather consider holly.

I completely agree with you. Not only for that reason have we changed our approach.

Had to correct a typo in my post ...

I find this question very interesting as well, considering one side with "something to plant" that offers privacy screening.
My mom and mother-in-law have even grown boxwood hedges specifically for us to use later if we want.
However, I prefer something that will bloom.
I was thinking of a lilac hedge. Does anyone have experience with that?

I find everything monotonous terrible. If you enjoy even a little gardening, you really shouldn’t put up with that. Mixed hedges are much nicer – and once a year, if necessary, you can afford a gardener to trim them properly. Cherry laurel is awful and, as already mentioned, not environmentally friendly. Personally, I only know people who regretted planting an entire hedge with it. If you look at classified ads from time to time, there are plenty of these offered for free if you dig them up yourself. Which by the way, is no fun either, as this stuff is very persistent.

forgotten: Lilac is great when it gets enough sunlight. But also combined with other plants, and it needs space—it can grow into a tree if you let it.
