Hello,
We finally have to deal with our least favorite trade, tiling!
Our contract with the general contractor includes tiles and installation at a size of 60 x 30 cm (24 x 12 inches) and a price of 30 €/sqm (3 €/sqft). The tiles we have now chosen cost 38 €/sqm (3.53 €/sqft), which means an extra 8 €/sqm (0.74 €/sqft) for about 50 sqm (538 sq ft). Okay, that’s fine.
But now the tiler suddenly wants 20 €/sqm (1.86 €/sqft) plus VAT, so a total of 24 €/sqm (2.23 €/sqft) extra because the tiles are longer—they are sized 90 x 22 cm (35 x 9 inches).
I find that quite excessive. I understand that there is a bit more effort involved with installing larger tiles and that he wants a little more money, but is it really 20 to 30 minutes extra work per square meter?
Could that be right? It seems quite high to me...
I am seriously considering replacing the tiles in the kitchen and pantry with parquet flooring instead...
Best regards,
Andreas

Can that be right? Seems quite expensive to me... That is not really expensive; the tiler has significantly more work when installing and also more waste. If you want tile skirting as well, it will be even more expensive, since only the end pieces of each strip can be used; the rest of the strip is not usable.

alter002914 Jul 2016 21:33For me, it was worth removing this trade from the contract. Just ask your general contractor (GC) what credit they would give you for it, and then you can decide. I think you can find a good craftsman to do the work for around €30 per square meter (about $31 per square foot). Then you can visit a tile showroom and finally add up the costs. I reserved our tiles at a showroom that is one of the top places in my area, and I got a significant discount there. Overall, it was worthwhile for me. It would have been much more expensive if I had done it through the GC.

alter002914 Jul 2016 21:35@Bauexperte: With 90x22, there isn’t much waste left over, don’t you think?
Hi Bauexperte,
What exactly is the extra effort? There’s no additional tile adhesive since it’s the same square meterage. The large tiles are overall 10% bigger, so it shouldn’t really be a weight issue either. And why more waste? Maybe when laying diagonally, but with straight installation that shouldn’t matter much. The 24 euro surcharge is already about two-thirds of the tile price; he must be having a lot of waste…
I can understand some extra work, but 24 euros must be about 50% of the labor cost!
With the baseboard it got even more interesting—they seriously want me to buy separate baseboards instead of cutting them from the tiles. But the latter is included in the general contractor’s price…
Best regards,
Andreas

Not everyone is up for that...
