ᐅ Oil refinery and power plant nearby

Hello,

we have found a very interesting plot of land in principle – however, when I look on maps, I see what appears to be an oil facility or something similar and a power station "nearby." There is still forest and a highway in between, but could this have any negative effects regarding odors, health, potential accidents, or something like that?

What do you think? Any concerns?

For me, that would be way too close. On top of that, there’s a nice substation even closer.

*Popcorn thread* 😉

What is a substation and why should it be located far away?

Try googling "citizens concerned about flare glow and benzene exposure." This specifically relates to the refinery.

And what is the special use area directly behind your property? Was there once industrial activity there?

Well, Henrik is amusing us again -)

It feels like we’re practically planning his house together through the forum

So it is after all – the same henrik who also started the financing thread.
I thought you wanted to build in the Frankfurt area.
Gelsenkirchen is quite a distance from there.

By the way, speaking of Gelsenkirchen: wasn’t there heavy mining activity there in the past?
Just making sure the land isn’t undermined, which could increase the risk of earthquakes or ground subsidence. It reminds me of a place in Saarland, Saarwellingen (I think that’s the name), where something like that happened once.

No, I have nothing to do with Frankfurt – would something like that show up in a soil survey, or how would you find out?

With so many negative factors, you hardly want to build anymore. It really is a big risk for others who just buy and build without getting surveys, without doing any research beforehand, and so on...
