Hi everyone,
Our shell construction is almost complete, and it’s about time to start taking care of some things I’ve neglected so far.
Doorbell / Intercom system
Our general contractor’s standard includes only a very basic system, the same one we have in our current house, but it’s really not worth much.
So, we want to upgrade, but what should we choose?
It’s important for us to have an aesthetically pleasing stainless steel front panel, which unfortunately puts us right into the expensive category.
The system must be able to control a motorized lock on the door.
Since we already have a Fritzbox and several tablets in the house, it would make sense to get a system that can connect to the Fritzbox and, instead of one or two indoor stations, simply mount tablets on the wall. The tablets are already used for controlling the blinds (Somfy), heating, and the controlled ventilation system.
Whether to go for an IP-based system with a camera or a simpler analog (a/b) system will probably depend on the price. A system with a camera would be very useful, as you can simply check who’s at the door before deciding whether to answer.
A nice bonus feature would be a keypad to open the door by entering a numeric code.
I have already searched:
Gira has very stylish products but they are extremely expensive and do not work with Fritzbox; you have to use their indoor stations.
Wantec (which I found mentioned in a thread here) has systems compatible with Fritzbox but no keypad feature yet. Also quite expensive.
Somfy currently offers a video intercom but it does not integrate with the new Somfy home control system, and the successor will only be available at the end of the year.
I have also read about Auerswald, but haven’t found much information yet.
Does anyone have any tips for me? I’m a bit clueless right now...
Oh yes, the budget would be a maximum of 1000 €, but it must be really high-end with all the bells and whistles. Without camera and keypad, I would set the limit around 300 €.
Thanks and best regards,
Andreas

Hello,
that’s disappointing, it means the DoorBird is useless now!
In my opinion, it’s completely crazy to run anything truly security-related through cloud servers. You might as well skip the door lock altogether.
If some script kiddies manage to hack in, they could open all the DoorBird front doors with a single keystroke.
No thanks, I’ll pass on that...
My Somfy roller shutters also run through the cloud, which has already given me enough concerns. But in the worst case, they can only raise or lower the shutters. Nothing more!
Best regards,
Andreas

Hi,
There may be some useful scenarios, although they are quite rare: for example, if your wife or child forgets their key, you can unlock the door remotely.
You can also see who is ringing your doorbell at home and then ask the delivery person to leave the package with neighbor XY.
However, I wouldn’t accept such a security risk in my home just for that convenience.
Best regards,
Andreas

Just out of curiosity, since I can’t think of a practical example. Why would I want to be able to unlock the door remotely?

Why would I want to be able to open the door remotely? For me, the main reason for such a system would be to simulate being at home by being able to speak to someone, especially if an uninvited person is at the door. I actually find the option to open the door remotely more problematic than helpful.
What actually happens if the cloud service provider goes bankrupt? Does everything become useless then? That would be another reason against it.

However, I would not bring such a security risk into my home for that possibility. But this is also possible without the cloud. For example, with almost any system that can be connected to a telephone system, you can forward the "calls" to your mobile phone. And then open the door.

And then open.... has the interfaces ...With Gira, this works if you add the telecom gateway. Or the telecom IP gateway, which costs about 1,000€ (approximately $1,080). Gira would cost me around 1,500€ (approximately $1,620) with video, audio was about 400€ (approximately $430). We haven't made a decision yet.
I had once ordered the Vista system from m-e. Didn’t even properly unpack it, repacked it right away and sent it back. If the buttons aren’t properly deburred and feel loose inside, I don’t want to get to know the rest. Just saying, to narrow down the options.
