Hello,
we are planning a prefabricated house with 140 m² (1,507 sq ft) of living space and are still unsure which heating system to choose.
The house will be built in the Ulm area on a slab-on-grade foundation. Therefore, only a relatively small utility room is available.
We are moving away from the ground source heat pump because we have read quite a lot of negative things about it.
What are your experiences? Also regarding the price?

What is more cost-effective often depends largely on the general contractor or building contractor. It is common to read here that the additional cost for an air-to-water heat pump compared to a gas condensing boiler amounts to several thousand euros. Costs for an unused gas connection are already taken into account, and so on.

From my layperson’s perspective, I would also expect the air-to-water heat pump to be cheaper. However, WT1987 still hoped in post 20 for a payback period of 7 to 10 years compared to the gas condensing boiler.

The figures in post 22 seem overly optimistic to me because the heating systems themselves were not considered at all. And a modulating air-to-water heat pump certainly costs more than a gas condensing boiler.

Well, anyone who is working with a general contractor (GC) and does not address the heating system before signing the contract—or is unable to—has essentially no influence on that aspect.

We have already discussed that heat pumps tend to cost more than a boiler, but nowadays modulating heat pumps are no longer significantly more expensive. And again, with a boiler, you still need a chimney, gas connection, etc.

Another issue is that—unfortunately—at least in my area, municipalities rarely install new gas lines anymore, and with gas tanks, using gas is already off the table for many.

Furthermore, if you have photovoltaic panels, a heat pump becomes even more worthwhile. In the future, with improved storage technology, this could become especially important. But as long as you have underfloor heating and place the heating room or utility room sensibly, you can easily replace the heat generator later on.

Chimney flue about 3,000€

For gas, you don't need a traditional chimney flue, just a shaft – so it will never cost you 3,000 euros. Even for a standard chimney flue, I didn’t pay more than 2,000 euros...

Hi Sebastian,

that’s correct. The plastic pipe for a gas condensing boiler isn’t expensive.

However, if the building authority insists on a chimney system: that can cost over 3,000 euros. That’s what happened to me.

So: it’s definitely wise to plan for up to 3,000 euros in the worst case.

Best regards,
Thorsten
