Hello everyone,

I’m new here.

The house construction will soon begin. I have a specific question regarding this.
In the upper floor, the ceiling will be covered with plasterboard panels (12.5mm) (0.5 inches). Below that, a counter batten (24x48mm) (1x2 inches) and the vapor barrier will be installed. The collar beams will be insulated between the rafters. This leaves a free space of about 36.5mm (1.4 inches), in which I would like to install LED downlights.

Now I have the following questions:

1. If I install 230V LED downlights with a recessed depth of 26mm (1 inch), is this feasible?
2. Or do I generally have too little space for LED downlights?
3. What alternatives are available?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards

10mm (0.4 inches) is definitely too little even for LEDs; most manufacturers require at least 60mm (2.4 inches) of free space.
Alternative: LED panel, but I am not familiar with the required clearances for those, so you should check.

In our case, the battens were "counter-battened" twice. That means one layer was installed perpendicular to the joists and then another layer parallel to the joists.

After consulting with us, the drywall contractor installed the upper battens vertically, so we had an installation height of 24 + 48 mm = 72 mm (1 inch + 2 inches = 3 inches) available.

Next to the holes where the lamps were installed, I placed a wooden block of the appropriate height to prevent the vapor barrier and the insulation above it from pressing directly against the lamps.

Hats off to a warm roof construction; in our case, practically nothing is installed beneath the drywall board except for the joists and counter battens. Only on top of the joists did we place the panels for walking in the attic, so we have about 20 cm (8 inches) of space.

Only because of the battens and joists did I have to do a bit of puzzling to position the spotlights symmetrically and exactly where I wanted them...

LED spots (230V)

They are not very recommended... it's better to consider installing proper LED fixtures instead. These usually deliver what is promised on the packaging and are generally much slimmer... even when designed as spotlights...

Hello everyone,

I did some research yesterday. I found LED spotlights from the brand Briloner that require only 30mm (1.2 inches) of spacing in between. I think this is a good solution.
