Hello everyone,

I know my title is a bit ambiguous. I initially wanted to write “toilet cartel,” but that wouldn’t be nearly as funny.
We received a first quote for the sanitary fixtures, and I’m really taken aback. I carefully researched the prices for the items I want online beforehand. I can’t accept paying €980 (about $1,070) in this quote for a washbasin that I can buy online for €250 (about $270)! That’s over 300% more. Where do these prices come from, generally speaking? I understand that the manufacturer, the supplier, and finally the installer all want to make a profit… but is there no way to get these items cheaper, the ones the installer will install?
I just don’t understand why we’re supposed to pay an additional €7,700 (about $8,400) for a few things we want done differently. Our general contractor doesn’t care where we source the bathroom fixtures, so we’re not tied to this one supplier.
How did you handle this? Did you just accept the extra cost? Or did anyone dare to organize and have these things installed independently?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Or alternatively, plan a masonry shower base and simply tile it, of course only if there is enough space. Then you can completely omit the shower partitions.

I would argue that a built-in wall tiled shower is more expensive than a glass shower screen. At least that was the case for us, and we chose the glass panel for the following reason: significantly more light enters the shower area. With a masonry shower, it can sometimes be much darker inside the shower (unless you install a dedicated light source just for that area).

In our case, both showers have two walls that are masonry/tiled. Two are made of glass.

I personally also like the brightness in the showers.

But the fully masonry variant, as I know it from friends and neighbors, is also nice.

Does the cost really differ that much?
I think not, especially if you invest in very high-quality shower walls—they are likely more expensive.

Best regards

We have shower niches and only need a glass door for each (1m wide (3.3 feet)). Each one costs 800€... I’m unfortunately unable to judge if this is reasonable.

You can get it cheaper, but also a bit more expensive – it is already a higher price range.

Regardless, one cannot comment on the quality...

Without knowing the exact product and whether delivery and installation are included, in my opinion nobody can really judge that.

If it is sufficiently thick safety glass, high-quality fittings, including installation, with sealing lips, etc., I would consider the price reasonable.
