ᐅ Have the sewer connection from the house carried out by a civil engineering contractor?

Hello everyone,

For our construction project, I am currently trying to obtain cost estimates for utility connections. I have already received rough estimates from the electricity provider and the water utility. Since a sewer connection is already available on the property, I assume I should contact the city’s civil engineering department.

So, a quick question: Who is usually responsible for carrying out the sewer connection from the house? The city? A civil engineering contractor?

Thanks in advance.

Greetings from rainy Aachen

Hello everyone,

Thank you very much for the numerous and helpful responses. You have definitely helped me a lot. In general, I will of course coordinate closely with our builder. I was mainly looking for a rough estimate of the costs and clarification on who actually carries out the work, as this was not entirely clear to me.

Our local water utility even offers a cost reduction if the individual pipes are installed in a coordinated way. I still need to inquire about this in more detail, but it will probably be handled through our builder as well.

Thanks for the quick help.

Regards,
Christian

Christian, make sure you keep an eye on that as the client.

There were two construction projects with developers here that did not coordinate properly with the civil engineering department, and, as mentioned, they had to remove all the drainage work and rebuild it again (expensive!).

You now have a good idea of which questions to ask.

Best regards,
Thorsten

Question: Are you actually building with a developer? That is, are you buying the plot of land including the house under a notarized contract?
Or do you mean your main contractor [general contractor (GC) or principal contractor]?
In the first case, you definitely should have nothing to do with the utility connections.

What is your rough estimate for the cost of the water connection?

The sewer connection is done by a civil engineer commissioned by the city; we need to install a pressurized pipe under the street.

Hello everyone,

Thorsten: No, I will keep a very close eye on everything and track all details carefully, as well as ensure that the contacts with the civil engineering department are maintained. Thanks for the tips.

Jochen: It is indeed a general contractor. Whenever you talk to people and acquaintances, they (unintentionally) refer to the developer, which is why that got mixed in.

Marc: The water utility estimated a rough cost of around 2000 euros. I mentioned that the distance to the house is about 7 meters (23 feet).

For completeness: The electricity provider quoted just under 1000 euros.

Best regards,
Christian

How much do you roughly estimate the water connection costs you?

Although the question wasn’t directed at me: For gas, water, electricity, and telecom, we paid 9,800 (about 10,780) for the connection on the access road. Telecom was minimal here. For the gas connection, we received a discount of 980 euros (about 1,080), so a total of 9,000 euros (about 9,890) for the access road connection.

The civil engineering work for the access road was included in that price. The approximate share for this was around 3,000 (about 3,300).
