Hello everyone,

Our land purchase contract states that we must retain a certain amount of rainwater and release it into a drainage system with a time delay.

What exactly does that mean? I looked it up and found something called a rainwater cistern. Is that what this refers to? What costs should we expect? Does anyone know? Are there any affordable alternatives? Do you have similar requirements?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Yes, we also had similar requirements. The rainwater from the roofs needs to be directed somewhere.
The costs can be included in the site preparation work as part of the ancillary construction costs.
There are several ways to manage rainwater drainage; one method is more ecological (reusing the water), and the other is more cost-effective.
We have a concrete shaft, called a rainwater cistern, without any additional function, and including site preparation work it was about 5,000 euros three years ago, which was the most affordable option. That’s what we were told.

Oh... 5000€ is not exactly a small amount either. 🙁
Hmm... Thank you very much for your quick reply! Best regards!

Oops, I think the 5000 also included the connection of the sewer manhole. We had all of that done together. I’ll correct myself and sincerely apologize for causing any shock 🙂

Haha! No problem.. We do need the connection anyway... ;-) But that does sound a bit more bearable already 😉

Hello Milanni,

this is included in a similar way in my land purchase contract as well. As already mentioned, this is quite common nowadays, and whether you choose plastic or concrete cisterns mainly depends on cost-effectiveness and handling preferences.

The size of the cistern also depends on other factors such as local regulations, the rainfall in your area, the size of your property, and what you ultimately plan to use it for, and so on. Yvonne has already explained the rest very well.

Regards, Andi 😉
