Hello everyone,

We are currently planning our house. My idea is to place the utility room with the gas boiler, ventilation system, washing machine, dryer, electrical panel, etc., on the upper floor.

Our house will be built without a basement, and since we want a double garage, it will be integrated into the house. This way, we would have more space on the ground floor, and I wouldn’t have to design the utility room too small.

Thank you very much!

Best regards,

The washing machine and dryer will be installed on the upper floor where the children's bedrooms are located, as most of the laundry is generated there. A frosted glass sliding door will be placed between the bathroom and the utility room so that the bathroom can still be used, for example, while ironing.

@ Bieber:
I specifically observed the drying behavior of laundry in the utility room yesterday and today for you:
A load of sweaters was hung up yesterday at 8 PM at 21°C (70°F) and 42% humidity. By 9 AM today, they were almost dry (except for my husband’s thick sweater, which was still slightly damp), and the humidity had increased to 50%.

We have
- utility connections on the ground floor
- washing machine and dryer in a 3m² (32ft²) room on the upper floor, accessible from the bathroom through a door
- boiler in the attic (in our case, the second upper floor)

This makes some things easier but takes up space in three different areas.

As an outsider, I have a question for those who have the washer and dryer installed on the upper floor:

How do you handle drying laundry in the summer? Do you also use the dryer instead of hanging clothes outside on a drying rack or line in the garden?

And what about noise disturbance in the bedrooms? (For example, when the children are already asleep in the evening, but you still need to dry or wash clothes for the next day.) Wouldn’t it be more practical to have the appliances located somewhere other than next to the bedrooms?

Where do you usually iron and fold the clothes on the upper floor? In the bedroom or somewhere else?

From my experience, dry clothes are often ironed and folded partly in the living area. Otherwise, for example, the kids play in the living room while the mom is alone upstairs busy with the laundry.

What are your experiences with this?

We have a washing machine and dryer in the utility room in the basement. Towels and underwear are always washed there because they also go into the dryer. On the upper floor bathroom, there is a second washing machine. It is used for regular laundry, which is then hung on drying racks on the balcony or, for larger items or ideal weather, on the rotary clothesline in the garden. If the weather is very bad, a drying rack is set up in the bathroom, but this rarely happens.

We don’t dry laundry outside in the garden (there’s no space for that), but use a dryer and a drying rack.

Our washing machine can be heard on the floor below, so it rarely runs during sleeping hours. The dryer is a bit noisy but only minimally.

Folding is done somewhere in the house, wherever it fits at the time. Ironing is practically never done...
