Hello everyone,
let’s be honest! When building your dream home, did you make an irreversible, serious mistake by skipping the basement and now regret it? I’m looking for your experiences and reasons why that is, so I don’t make the same mistake myself, as I’m currently deciding whether to build with or without a basement.

What exactly do you save by building without a basement? A slab foundation probably costs around 10,000 euros, right?
A basement might cost between 30,000 and 40,000 euros, so the difference is about 20,000 to 30,000 euros.
If you then build a utility room above ground (about 15m² (160 ft²)) and pay around 1,500 euros per square meter, that room will cost roughly another 20,000 euros. So what are you actually saving? Also, you still have those "extra square meters" on the first floor and have to pay accordingly for them.
Can someone explain this to me?

Best regards,
Sabine

Even with a basement, you still need a concrete slab—but not a strip footing.

No one can really tell you where and how to save money—those great price-per-square-meter figures won’t help much, especially since for a utility room you definitely won’t be paying 1,500 euros or more per square meter.

But you’ve recognized something important: you don’t just need to create space on the ground floor, but automatically also above it...

And nowadays, with land prices in many metropolitan areas exceeding 200 to 400 euros per square meter, building above ground can be quite expensive.

As the saying goes: it depends...

I would never assume someone doesn’t have money just because they didn’t build a basement, but on the other hand, I find those totally absurd hoarder-like ideas from people who seem to repeatedly convince themselves and others with a mantra that basements are nothing but disposal centers or party and hobby rooms of past generations simply crazy.

We have planned a fitness room, a multi-purpose TV room, a laundry and bathroom, a technical room, and a storage closet. All these rooms are well positioned in the basement according to the floor plan. With building land costing 600 euros per square meter (approximately 56 dollars per square foot) above ground, this is beyond my budget, and there are no large building plots available.

But I’m happy to share the recipe for the baked apple jam... It’s most popular here eaten by the spoonful...

I lived for 10 years without a basement in my one-bedroom apartment and often found it quite inconvenient. I enjoy working on projects in my free time, which includes my motorcycle and car audio hobbies.

I was not able to fully pursue these interests without major obstacles—I always had to go to my parents’ place whenever I wanted to saw or drill. Everything had to be stored in the utility room inside the apartment, including oil, tires, and spare parts. According to fire safety regulations, you’re not allowed to store such items in a garage.

Here, we only had a shared garage that everyone in the building had access to.

Now, in our house, having a basement was essential. Thanks to the slight slope of the site, we also integrated a basement apartment of about 55m² (600 square feet). The rest of the basement is used for storage and the heating room. Even if I only go down there once a week, it’s a big advantage.

We still planned a utility room right next to the kitchen for daily groceries, drinks, cleaning supplies, toolboxes, and so on.

And at some point, a sauna will be installed in the basement :P

Here’s the same with elderberry-blackberry and quince jam.

Do you really carry your moped down to the basement just to do some screwing?!
