Hello everyone,

I would like to create a house design. Which software would you recommend?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards

Sweethome 3D, pencil and paper, Revit (I tried all three)
I liked Revit the most – but the other two are also sufficient.
I would strongly recommend that you first familiarize yourself with basic planning principles or, even more importantly, clarify exactly what you want and are allowed to build.
Otherwise, in the beginning, you can follow some general guidelines, such as:
  • Bedrooms should have at least 90cm (35 inches) of space on each side of the bed,
  • Bathrooms should ideally not be too far from the utility room; it’s also good if they are stacked vertically to simplify plumbing,
  • Dining tables benefit from about 90cm (35 inches) of clearance around them.

Thank you, BeHaElja.

Planning basics, building restrictions, and so on—I have already gone through all of that, and now it’s time to focus on the house design.

I didn’t get along very well with SweetHome3D.

Sweet Home 3D is not that bad in the end. Missing models can be created quite easily with SketchUp. Using SketchUp for the entire house is very tedious!

I also tried the 3D CAD Architect, which offers a lot more but is also quite expensive. For the price, it didn’t seem worth it to me in the end (for example, the garden feature is only available in the €999 version). There are 24-hour trial versions. If you don’t close the program, it can run longer 🙂

I know this doesn’t directly answer your question, but why do you want to create the design yourself? Usually, architects are paid for that. If you already have fixed ideas, it usually doesn’t work out anyway. And if the plot of land is missing, the whole approach is flawed from the start.

That’s why it’s better to create a list of requirements: What do I want? 3 rooms, 5 rooms, a walk-in closet, 5 bathrooms, etc. -> A skilled architect will then come up with a solution that fits your needs.

I’d like to join in here—what would you recommend regarding planning fundamentals?
